Programs That Help Single Mothers – The One Family Scholars Program, part of One Family in Waltham, Massachusetts, is dedicated to preventing homelessness and breaking the cycle of family poverty in Massachusetts. Provides financial and other academic support to low-income single parents.

The program aims to prevent homelessness by helping single parents achieve academic success that will enable them to earn a living wage to support their families.

“Overall, we want to call our scholars every month to encourage them, support them, and help them think about any academic or personal challenges they may be facing,” said Carsten Cash, College and Career Advisor at One. family “Most of the work I do is communicating with scientists.”

Scholars may receive the final dollar of tuition (covers tuition after applying for the scholarship), a fund for books and materials, and a monthly stipend that varies based on their academic performance and participation in extracurricular activities. In addition to financial support and academic consultancy services, the program also aims to help academics find jobs and gain leadership skills.

To date, 398 scholars have successfully completed their diplomas with One Family Scholar. Last year, nearly 90 people applied.

Located in Beverly, Massachusetts, north of Boston, Endicott College offers the Keys to Degrees program for single parents lacking educational and career opportunities. It offers private higher education to single parents and low-income parents, depending on the program and living conditions. It educates both parents and children and helps them move from poverty to the middle class.

“I want all students, whether they have children or not, to have the opportunity to go to college,” Autumn Green, the program’s director, said when asked about the ultimate goal of the single-parent program.

Housing Assistance For Single Moms

Due to the limited number of housing available, 10 students are typically enrolled in the program. Currently, 8 of our students are studying. Typically, the program will add two students per year, depending on how many students graduate that year.

The program provides a scholarship called a “single parent scholarship” that covers tuition, and they only have to pay $5,000 a year for room, board and other college needs. The program also offers on-campus work and training to help them earn money. Community partnerships can also help single parents find other resources.

These resources primarily help students focus on their academic studies. Green said they try to make sure school is parents’ second priority, after their children. According to him, work should come in third place as parents take responsibility for daily care.

Each student is required to work with a one-on-one academic coach, a feature of the program, unless he or she maintains a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and a grade of C or lower. The coach works with students on strategies such as time management, task management, and workload organization. Students who work with a coach learn better, Green said.

The Student Nanny Program is another special part of Keys to Degrees. Children can go to school while their parents are in class or busy with other tasks. This allows parents to participate in more extracurricular activities.

The program also helps students learn life skills. Because the majority of students are young and some have never lived outside their parents’ home, they lack the skills they need to live independently. The program creates opportunities for older students to mentor younger students. The students share a four-bedroom house with another family so they can learn from each other. “Even though they have children, they are children in many ways,” Green said.

Approximately 70 percent of students in the program earn a bachelor’s degree within four years. That rate is close to the graduation rate of a full-time college program, and many Keys to Degrees students even go on to graduate school, Green said. Graduates of the program work in a variety of jobs across the country, including cancer researchers, accountants and teachers.

Also aiming to break the cycle of poverty, Jeremiah’s program works with single mothers to help them succeed in the workplace, prepare their children to succeed in school, and reduce intergenerational dependence on public assistance. It partners with Endicott College to help single mothers achieve their academic goals.
